I simply felt like tackling the topic of "skirts for men" today, and writing a little about it from my own point of view.
Because if you know this blog, you'll know I love wearing skirts myself, and I'd genuinely like to see the topic get more attention in today's media landscape and in everyday life.

The history of the skirt on men is, in fact, very, very old. I've written about this before, both here on the blog and in my book. And let's be completely honest for a moment: the men's skirt is the coolest, most stylish, and absolutely least-purchased garment in our closets, right? And the runways of this world would very much like to convince us today that the skirt has made its comeback for men. You see it more and more often — from Louis Vuitton to film festivals and beyond.

But before you ask yourself, "Is this really (m)y thing?" — let me assure you, it is. The moment you even entertain the thought of wearing one: do it. And beyond that, it's a genuinely cool thing! Skirts for men are, as I said, truly nothing new anymore, and it's time you joined the fashion revolution. In this thoroughly entertaining and informative post, I'll walk you through the different styles and show you how to wear them like a true fashion connoisseur.

Why Skirts for Men?

Before we get to the styles, let's talk briefly about why men should wear skirts. I was genuinely surprised recently, browsing the "Inspiration" section of an online fashion retailer's app, to see male models in skirts, heels, and dresses. Because just a few years ago, that only ever happened in people's own living rooms, and only very rarely in the media — let alone in city centers, unless it was nighttime.

Skirts don't just offer incredible comfort (farewell, constricted legs!) — they're also an expression of fashion freedom and personal style. So if you're ready to say goodbye to stereotypical gender roles and join the fashion revolution, keep reading!

What a Men's Skirt Is Not

By the way, men who wear skirts — passionately, even — are completely normal and part of everyday life in many countries, such as Fiji or Bhutan. In Greece, it's even a fixed part of the military uniform, which is about as staunchly masculine a domain as you can get. But unmatched, and an example just about everyone knows, is the cultural significance of the kilt in Scotland.

One quick note on German terminology, since it trips people up: in German, "Herrenrock" historically doesn't mean a men's skirt at all — it refers to a long men's coat, similar to a frock coat or tailcoat, worn over a suit. That's not the garment we're talking about here. What we mean in this post is the men's skirt worn at hip height — the "Männerrock," to use the proper German term — which is a completely different piece of clothing altogether. Just a bit of definitional housekeeping. From here on, this post refers exclusively to the men's skirt — or, simply put: skirts for men.

Even though the men's skirt shares its basic construction with the classic skirt, it often differs significantly in shape and cut. Feminine skirts tend to want every part of the body accentuated, and often favor short cuts, silky, shiny fabrics, or deliberately drape around the leg area. Feminine fashion often aims for exactly that effect. Which also means that with skirts, fabric plays just as defining a role as cut. So how does that work for skirts made for men? Let's start with a very present issue: the bulge. The classic skirt, as we've known it for decades — nearly centuries, even — is often cut very close to the body. Which also means that with unfavorable fabric choices, a man's best asset can end up rather literally front and center.

While researching this post, I noticed that a large number of men in online forums explicitly don't want their genitals to be visible through the fabric. Some, on the other hand, aren't bothered by it at all — myself included. Personally, I find it depends on the cut, whether something might show through or not. And if it does, I simply avoid that particular piece and buy something else.

What Styles Are There?

Below, I'll go through what I personally consider the most important styles when it comes to "men's skirts." I've deliberately kept it a little conservative here, since while there are no real limits on what you can wear, not every man is ready to venture straight into wild leather skirts or denim minis — or wants to. It also has to suit the person wearing it.

The Kilt

We all know it from films, from stage plays, or simply from men wearing it out on the street: the kilt. A kilt is a traditional Scottish skirt designed specifically for men. It's typically knee-length and made from a single piece of fabric that's pleated and wrapped around the hips. Kilts are often made from wool and typically feature a tartan pattern representing the colors and design of a particular Scottish clan or family. The kilt is a symbol of Scottish culture and tradition and is frequently worn at formal occasions such as weddings or social events. In recent years, however, the kilt has also gained popularity as a fashion piece and is worn by some men as a stylish alternative to trousers. Still, it's fair to say that, simply through its choice of fabric and pattern, the kilt doesn't really leave traditionally masculine fashion territory.

The Sarong

You haven't heard of it either? Neither had I, until I researched this post. The term was completely unfamiliar to me before. Which is maybe also because I've tended to vacation in urban regions so far, and haven't spent much time in East Asia. Why does that matter? You'll find out now.

This versatile garment can be found across an enormous range of cultures around the globe and is excellent for warm weather. Simply tie it around your hips and pair it with a casual T-shirt or a button-down for a relaxed, beach-ready look. The sarong has its roots in Southeast Asia and is especially widespread in countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines. But other tropical regions, such as the Pacific islands and parts of Africa, also have their own versions of this comfortable garment.

The materials sarongs are made from range from lightweight cotton to luxurious silk fabrics. The designs range from simple, solid-colored fabrics to elaborately patterned, hand-crafted batik prints. This variety of materials and patterns lets you choose a sarong that matches your personal style and suits a wide range of occasions.

The Pleated Skirt

Who says men can't wear pleats, anyway? As in, pleated skirts… Yes, you read that right. Because this particular category has recently become very popular with both men and women. This skirt is perfect for the fashion-conscious man who's ready to push boundaries. Wear it with a smart shirt and loafers for an elegant, refined look. Pleated skirts stand out above all for their extremely fine, evenly arranged pleats, which give the wearer both more freedom of movement and a touch of elegance. This category of skirt was originally developed for women's fashion. Today, however, these skirts have also found their way into men's fashion and are a growing trend for anyone who wants to express themselves through style.

When wearing a pleated skirt, there are various lengths and styles to choose from. Whether mini, midi, or maxi — choose the length that best matches your personal style and comfort level. The materials can vary too: from airy chiffon for warm days to heavier wool fabric for cooler temperatures.

Pair your pleated skirt with a smart shirt or a fitted turtleneck to balance out your proportions and keep the focus on the skirt. Avoid overly loose or voluminous tops, since they can make the look unflattering. You should also avoid patterned T-shirts, sweaters, or shirts, since that can make the whole look too busy. Remember: you're already the eye-catcher, with your pleated skirt swishing along.

I'd pair it with loafers. They're an excellent choice for giving your outfit a classic touch. Alternatively, brogues or chunky "derby" boots can create an interesting style contrast. And while we're at it: keep your accessories simple and understated so the pleated skirt stays the center of attention. A slim tie or a bow tie can work for more formal occasions, while a smart watch or a subtle bracelet can round out the look. Don't overdo it, or the outfit will start to feel cluttered.

Otherwise, feel free to play with colors and subtle patterns. Pair a solid-colored pleated skirt with a lightly patterned shirt, or choose an eye-catching skirt to make a fashion statement — if you dare. In the end, it also depends on the season. In cooler weather, consider a subtle pair of tights or leggings under your pleated skirt to stay warm while adding an interesting texture to your outfit.

The Wrap Skirt

Another favorite for warm days: the wrap skirt, as the ultimate combination of flexibility and comfort. Perfect for the man who loves showing off his legs without feeling boxed in by trousers. The wrap skirt isn't just comfortable, it's also incredibly versatile and can be worn and styled in different ways to create both casual and more formal looks.

The wrap skirt basically consists of a rectangular piece of fabric that's wrapped around the waist and secured with a knot or a buckle. It's available in various materials, from lightweight, breathable fabrics like cotton or linen for hot summer days to warmer materials like wool or tweed for colder temperatures. When it comes to colors, patterns, and lengths, there are countless options to match your personal style.

Choose a simple T-shirt, polo shirt, or button-down shirt in a color that complements your wrap skirt. Avoid overly loose or voluminous tops, since they can make the look unflattering. A matching belt can not only help hold the wrap skirt in place, but also give your outfit structure and style. Leather or fabric belts both work well and can be chosen depending on the look you're going for. Sneakers are an excellent choice for a casual look. They give your outfit a sporty touch and complement the relaxed character of the wrap skirt. Alternatively, sandals or espadrilles work for a summery style, or boots for colder days. Otherwise, keep your accessories simple and understated so the wrap skirt stays the focus. Sunglasses, a smart watch, or a subtle bracelet can round out the look without overwhelming it.

How to Wear Skirts as a Man

This section is actually easy to sum up: just do it. But life has taught me that whenever we see the word "just" in a sentence, it's basically everything except simple. Many men simply don't dare to wear a skirt — or if they do, only within their own four walls. But let's take this step by step.

Confidence is the key if you want to wear a skirt as a man. No matter which skirt style you choose, wear it with pride and confidence. The world is your runway, so don't let other people's opinions hold you back. Remember that the days when skirts were only meant for women are over. You're making a fashion statement, and that deserves recognition! Pair your skirt with matching accessories like belts, shoes, and hats to pull your look together and give it a personal touch. You don't even need to wear high heels — quite the opposite. Classic men's shoes underscore the look very well in any case. You can even choose casual shoes for relaxed occasions or elegant lace-ups for more formal events. Make sure your accessories are color-coordinated with your skirt and reinforce the style you're going for.

Also make sure your skirt has the right length and fit to achieve the look you want while staying comfortable. Skirts that are too short or too long can look unflattering and distract from your fashion statement. Try out different lengths and find out which one best suits your figure and your personal style. Also avoid overly voluminous or loose tops, which can obscure your build and throw off your outfit's proportions. Instead, choose a well-fitted shirt, T-shirt, or polo that's color-coordinated with your skirt and rounds out your outfit harmoniously.

But don't be afraid, fundamentally, to experiment with different styles, colors, and patterns to find your own personal skirt look. Fashion is an expression of your personality, and there are no fixed rules for how you should wear skirts. Try out different combinations and find out what you like best and what makes you feel most comfortable.

So, What Now?

Get out there! If you're already toying with the idea, then step onto the stage of life. My first time wearing a skirt in public was marked by adrenaline, tension, and plenty of bewildered looks from other people. But that's rarely anything other than a "wow, I wouldn't dare do that" look. Because let's be honest, guys: you wouldn't have landed here if you didn't have a problem with it — or hadn't built one up in your head.
